Christian bloggers on Hurricane Ike - reports and relief links

Here is an aggregation of thoughts, prayers, resources for help, ministries, shelters and other information posted by Christians who blog regarding Hurricane Ike and its potentially destructive aftermath.

The Night Which Will Live In Imfamy; Proverbs One And Ike (blessings2you)

from ChristianBlog.Com - My heart is heavy this evening for it knows the intense struggle so many of my brothers and sisters are going through due to Hurricane Ike. Whether “hunkered down” in their homes or far away in shelters or staying with friends or family; they all are filled with fear and dread as they await the end result of what many tried to warn of for days. Those foolish enough to not leave the coastal areas of Texas and Louisiana will most certainly perish this night. Those who obeyed orders and never left Houston will be cursing and praying as never before as the storm of storms rips their roofs off their houses and water floods them from above and below.

Also from the same an Urgent Plea For Prayer–Galveston/Houston Area (blessings2you)

Unlike potential hurricane Hanna which never developed, Ike has been churning for quite some time and has caused untold destruction to many places along the way.

Ike is currently slowly making his way toward the Houston area. Over the next 24 hours, Ike will finally let his plans be known as to where He is going to strike and how strong He will be. This is what we know for absolute, 100% sur

The United Church of Christ - 19 hours ago -  Hurricane Ike Will Bring “Certain Death”

The UCC South Central Conference (SCC) is prepared for the arrival of Hurricane Ike. Douglas Anders, Conference Minister, in the weekly local church e-newsletter has provided web links and phone numbers for pastors and members who may need immediate relief following the hurricane. Additionally, several conference members have agreed to be points of contact for pastors in the path of Hurricane Ike.

Mark Byron - 12:07 AM  - Houston, We Have a Problem

Hurricane Ike seems to be heading towards Houston, as its current track has it landing south of Houston in Freeport. Freeport rings a bell, since Dow Chemical has a big plant there and there was an active shuttle of staff between Dow’s HQ town of Midland, MI (my hometown for those new to the Peanut Gallery) and Freeport.

However, it’s not Dow’s plant that has me worried; my in-laws are in the northern suburbs of Houston, as well as a number of Eileen’s freinds … The historic parallel is of Hurricane Alicia, which hit just before they moved in a quarter-century ago.

Confessions of a Catholic Mom 8 hours ago -  Hurricane Ike

As I write, according to the latest news, Ike is pounding the Gulf Coast near Houston. I have a friend that lives near there, and evacuated with her family, inland last Thursday evening. God willing, they are safe and out of harms way, …

Desiring God Blog - Sep 12, 2008 -  As the Hurricane Approaches

Like many of you, DG staff members have relatives and friends that live directly in the path of this storm. Events like this remind us that “here we have no lasting city” (Heb. 13:14Open Link in New Window). Everything can shake. Everything can be destroyed. We are very small and not in control.

The Lord wants us to remember those in distress and pray for them. He loves to answer prayer. We don’t want to fail in doing that.

Church Solutions - 11 Sep 2008 - Hurricane Ike Puts Houston on High Alert; Churches Rush Aid to Cuba

… Hurricane Ike is tracking toward the Gulf Coast of Texas and could make landfall with Category 4 intensity. In response, churches – especially in Houston – are praying and preparing.

Hurricane Ike Threatens Texas Parishes - Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of North America - The oncoming projections of Hurricane IKE places its path DIRECTLY over San Antonio.  Despite being 150 miles from the ocean  it is possible that we could experience 100 mile an hour winds should this make landfall as a category 4 or 5. Presently it is predicted to make landfall between Port O’Connor and Corpus Christi as a category 3 on early morning this Saturday. At present there is a 40% chance of Tropical Storm Force winds hitting us. For more information and up to the minute coverage see:

Churches provide comfort to evacuees - Most of the nearly one million people who have evacuated from the Texas coast will stay in a hotel or with relatives or go to special relief centers set up further inland or in neighboring states. But in a unique program, some local churches usually known more for their response after a disaster hits, are helping to provide comfort to many of the evacuees of Hurricane Ike.

Baptists gear up for post-Ike challenge - GRAPEVINE, Texas (BP)–Southern Baptist disaster relief preparation for Hurricane Ike “is going chaotic but good,” said Jim Richardson, disaster relief director for the Southern Baptists of Texas Convention.

Lutherans Brace for Hurricane Ike - More than 1 million people have evacuated along the U.S. Gulf Coast in anticipation of Hurricane Ike, which is expected to make landfall Sept. 12-13, according to the Rev. Kevin A. Massey, director, Lutheran Disaster Response — a collaborative ministry of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) and the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod (LCMS).  Although evacuation is essential, the process is a physical, emotional and financial hardship for many, he said.

Salvation Army sends crews to Hurricane Ike - Salvation Army volunteers throughout Florida are traveling to Texas to help respond when Hurricane Ike makes landfall. Volunteers are planning to focus on the immediate needs of disaster survivors and first-responders.

Hurricane Ike wreaks havoc; 1.3 million without power - Thoughts and prayers go out to the residents of Houston, Galveston, and other parts of Texas getting slammed by Hurricane Ike. The Weather Nerd is calling it the “Great Galveston Hurricane of 2008.” He’s also got a  live Storm Surge page.
