all forms of socialism are doubly damned — they are isms and wrong. Capitalism is singly damned — it is an ism, and as such, it cannot sustain itself. Without Jesus, it will die because without Jesus, envy rules absolutely in all economic affairs. - Douglas Wilson, Blog & Mablog

…everybody in DC in high office somehow manages to do extremely well for themselves and ocassionally, for their constituents who aren’t fantastically rich. They do rather better for their constituents who are fantastically rich. Part of the glory of the two party system is that every four years the pigs can lift their snouts from the trough, oink something about how the other party candidate is a rich guy who is out of touch with you and then get back to sucking up the swill. This goes for the guy with the uncertain number of houses and for the guy whose wife imagines the average taxpayer will spend half their rebate on a pair of earrings. And if you notice and remark on the fact that the rich seems to have rather more in common with one another than with the average voter, somebody on the Right can accuse you of class envy or creeping socialism and somebody on the Left can complain that you are trying to silence the Progressive Voice of a George Soros, a Bill Gates or whoever else is trying to cull the herds of the Unfit via vast grants to Planned Parenthood.
And from one of Mark’s regular readers:
Much like you, I’ve found myself, well, disgusted by both sides. From a Catholic perspective I’m completely appalled by the Obama’s “pro-choice” platform, not to mention his (oh, excuse me: His) lack of executive experience and affinity for socialism/liberation theology. McCain-Palin are just beating the Orwellian war drums and, frankly, they terrify me. Palin makes the ticket better, overall…but it’s definitely not enough.
La Shawn Barber almost a month ago:
Socialist types trying to appeal to Christians often cite Jesus’ earthly ministry of physically feeding the poor and healing the sick. Never mind that these acts were signs pointing to spiritual feeding and healing or that these social types conveniently leave out all that scary stuff about God’s judgment against the unrepentant. They can quote chapter and verse on helping “the least of my brothers” with more taxpayer-supported government programs, but ignore the reality of Christ’s judgment on the world or the need to accept Christ to avoid that judgment.

Accountability?
… So the treasury secretary is allowed to spend up to $700 billion of taxpayer money to buy off Wall Street’s mistakes and no one can question his or her decisions? Ick. … In the Agora
John McCain has taken a lot of heat for saying that the fundamentals of our economy remain strong. He was also pilloried for stating several months ago that he was “always for less regulation” , although the rest of his quote (conveniently omitted by Democrats) states that “there is a need for government oversight”.
But is McCain right?
